OPERA TALK: ICON SERIES- MARIAN ANDERSON

DESCRIPTION   FEATURING   TANISHA’S PICKS

Marian Anderson (1897-1993) is a cultural icon whose contralto voice broke through racial barriers in the operatic world and ultimately in American society. Her beautiful illustrious voice is most memorable through her controversial recital on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 and her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1955.

  • Tanisha's top Joan Sutherland Moments

Marian Anderson's Trailblazing Moments to remember:

"When I was a little girl, I had the privilege to have the World Book Encylopedia in my room.  My mom introduced opera to me through Jessye Norman... However, when I grew into my profession and the discovery of myself as a woman of color in the arts, I began to understand the magnitude of the incredible Marian Anderson." -Tanisha
